Sadly sometime on Wednesday 28th May our beautiful orchard received some unwanted visitors. Their intent seemed to be to cause as much damage as possible, rather than theft. The fire brigade responded quickly and the effects of the fires were limited although the compost toilet was very badly damaged.
In true Friends of Holywell’s park ethos and commitment, a group of volunteers met on Thursday morning for a tidy up and repair mission. Once the Forensic Science team had finished their work we were allowed into the orchard. There were no words to express our heartbreak and disbelief at the damage we saw.
The compost toilet will require a lot of repair before it can be used again. Entry to one of the sheds had been gained via the roof after failure to prise open the door. Scattered on the ground were the contents of the shed…many things broken or unusable, however tools and other equipment just needed to be gathered up. Sadly our beautiful orchard has been targeted before.
Volunteers came to the rescue before just as they did today. Many thanks to everyone who helped clean up the mess and make repairs to the sheds. The mindless actions of some will never win over the care, passion and love of park users and volunteers.
