Cliff Lane primary school pupil Ava Shipp took her campaign to improve road safety outside the school to Suffolk County Council.
Ten year old Ava was joined by school friends and made a strong case for a pedestrian crossing to protect pupils. She explained there had been accidents and near missed during school run at the busy school.
Transport lead Paul West (pictured above with local Cllr Liz Harsant) received a petition from the school and local community asking for action. He promised to investigate options with council officers.
Meanwhile a SID sign has been put in place outside the school. The sign lights up and reminds drivers to slow down.
For local Councillor Liz Harsant, it has been a long-standing priority (over twenty years!) to improve safety outside Cliff Lane Primary School. Generations of children and their families have faced real challenges crossing this busy road, and despite numerous proposals over the years, it has often been frustrating to see suggested solutions not come to fruition.
Harsant commented “I am delighted that we have finally been able to take a positive step forward with the installation of a Speed Indicator Device, funded through my Highways Budget. While this may seem a small measure to some, it represents persistence, partnership, and a genuine commitment to making our local area safer for young people.
Equally important to me was ensuring that the voices of the children themselves were heard. I was proud to arrange for six pupils from Cliff Lane Primary School to visit Endeavour House, where they confidently presented their case for a lighted crossing on Cliff Lane. They spoke with great clarity and conviction in the Council Chamber and formally handed their petition to Councillor Paul West, Cabinet Member for Highways.
It was a truly rewarding morning and a powerful reminder that when young people are given the opportunity, they can play a meaningful role in shaping their community. I very much hope this is another step towards achieving a permanent crossing solution and continuing to improve safety for all those who live, work, and study in the area.”
