Do you know your Golden Noble apple from a Norfolk Royal or the Catshead apple from the humble Russet?
Come along and celebrate the Great British Apple at Holywells Park on Saturday.
This family event, run by the Friends of Holywells Park, is from 11am to 2pm on Saturday October 15, with lots of fun for all.
Admission is free and you can meet Lord and Lady Apple, try apple bobbing, and have homemade soup, and apple juice from the orchard or mulled apple juice and buy Holywells own honey. There will also be story-telling from Gerry Donlon too.
Yvonne Westley, one of the organising committee, said: “It’s the best time to celebrate the British apple. Come along and join us.
“You can also sign up to become a friend of the park, and get involved year-round.
“Many people say autumn is their favourite time in this beautiful park with the changing colours of the leaves. Everyone has their favourite apple. Mine is the standard russet, it’s lovely.”
There are activities for children, including a hunt in the orchard itself, and there are nature trails around the parkland.
There have been orchards on the park since the days the Cobbold brewing family lived here. Today there are some 20 different varieties of apple growing, and managed by the friends’ group.
Come into the park from the Cliff Lane entrance and follow the signs near the Stable Block and Conservatory. Apple Day has been running here for more than 15 years, with only a break during Covid lockdown.
An apple expert is also coming along, so if you have an apple in your garden that needs identifying, bring along some apples – with their foliage, and you might get some interesting information.
